Removable Dentures
A removable denture is made of either plastic only or plastic and metal. The denture hooks on to remaining teeth (if any) and fills gaps left by missing teeth. The advantage of removable dentures is that they are a quick solution to adding false teeth into spaces to help you chew softer foods. Their disadvantages, however, are many. Dentures are usually loose and can move or rock in your mouth as you eat. They often cover the roof of the mouth, which can interfere with speech and taste. The clasps that clip on remaining teeth can create extra torque forces, causing them to loosen or break down faster. In addition, the excessive pressure on your gums can accelerate bone shrinkage.
Patients with dentures do not chew their food nearly as effectively as patients with healthy natural teeth or dental implants. Therefore, some patients simply swallow food that is not completely chewed, resulting in long-term digestive problems.
